Quake 3 Arena Tactics

Somewhere in the Quake 3 Manual is says if it moves frag it. Thats pretty much it but there are some unwritten rules.

If a players not moving don`t frag them but thats not always possible.
If a players chatting don`t frag them again not always possible.
Its not a good idea to frag players on the same team as you for some reason they complain.

Fragging a human is much harder than a bot why ? humans are so unpredictable. If when playing you come across a human beware there going to try and frag you.

Moving
The mistake all new Quake 3 Arena players make standing still don`t do it. Stand still firing your weapon and even I will frag you. Walking around the map again not a good idea run everywhere. Side stepping and strafe jumping you need to learn how to do this as quickly as possible. Don`t know what side stepping and strafe jumping are I will explain.

Side Stepping
Lets start with the easy one side stepping blind two keys "A and S" to side step left right or like me you work for a living and don`t have girly hands use the arrow keys. How dare I use the arrow keys most hard core players would say . Thats it side stepping done you will soon love side stepping gets you out of trouble all the time.

Strafe Jumping
How do you do it ?
Press the forward key and keep it pressed.
Jump and every time you hit the floor press jump again.
Press the side step left then right alternatively as you hit the ground
To get even more speed move the mouse left and right as you land.
Sounds complicated don`t worry you will soon pick it up if you keep practicing.

Fragging
Ok you are now moving around the map quickly side stepping and generally being hard to frag Its time to start fragging other players. When playing Free For All or any other type of Quake 3 game always try and find a group of players fragging each other hopefully there ammo armour and health will be drained and you can run in and clean up. Don`t be afraid of it not being sporting I would quite happly frag you if you was on the job or sleeping.

Weapons
See the Weapons section of this site Iv`e covered Quake 3 weapons and there power and the best ways to use them there.

Splash Damage
Aim at the floor or wall just infront of a player when using the rocket launcher doing this offers a wider target area rather get 50% of a hit than totally miss them. Practice Practice Practice.

Know Your Maps
You must learn your maps I can`t emphasize this enough you must learn your maps. Its a need to know basis and you need to know. Where the armour is the ammo power ups the quad good places to ambush jump pads where you can rocket jump good places to drop grenades etc etc etc. Its a lot to learn. Use spectator mode and use it lots watch good players how they move and frag when they pick up weapons what weapons they use distance power etc. Ask questions not all players will help you but most will.

Control
Its possible to control the whole game by knowing when power pils quads armour is about to respawn how ? Well there are timing scripts that will tell you but after a while your own internal clock will take over and you will just know. Why is it so important well if you have twice as much health and armour as the players your playing it helps .

Headphones
Headphones are a must you can tell so much from listening to foot steps and back ground noise will tell you how close other players are to you. Turn Quake threes in game music off.

Practice
Practice Practice Practice lots and you will still get fragged no matter how good you are somebody will be better so beware.
